The Museum: Sometimes referred to as unique, quirky, or a walk down memory lane, The American Sign Museum is certainly a family-friendly journey into Americana. Visitors and members alike enjoy a very bright, lively, and fun environment to learn and appreciate the evolution of commercial signage. Founded in 1999, the Museum celebrates the rich history of American signage through preservation and education. The summer of 2024 provides a springboard to even greater success by doubling the museum’s original footprint of 20,000 sq. ft. to accommodate expanded exhibits, educational programming, maker spaces, and event rental options. Its membership and visitor numbers continue to grow along with its regional and national presence bolstered by frequent Sunday NFL broadcasts of its bright iconic signs.
The Director Opportunity: The successful candidate will embody the spirit of the museum with an eager and passionate staff of 11, an operating budget of $1.58MM, and a successfully completed $5.34MM capital campaign. Reporting to the 15-member Board of Trustees, leading the staff and collaborating with the Museum’s Founder, the Director will spearhead a renewed strategic plan to ensure a healthy future. One immediate hire for the Director will be a full-time professional to direct fundraising and oversee membership and marketing.
Qualifications/expectations: As primary ambassador of the ASM, the successful candidate will bring nonprofit – if not museum – executive level leadership successes. Highly prized will be demonstrated abilities to enable staff and engage the board in building visitor/member-focused engagement. Characteristics desired by Trustees and staff include exemplary people skills, open communicator, insightful, enabling delegator, diplomatically engaging personality, high emotional intelligence, collaborative, team-oriented, strong organizational skills, strategic, listener, trusting motivator, common sense, and business mind for a growing nonprofit. Genuine interest, experience, or academic degrees in marketing, arts, science, history expected.
