TOPIC:
“Wish I didn’t know now what I didn’t know then.”
What happens when your donor no longer wants that life income gift?
Stories. Every fundraiser has good stories. Among those stories are stories of gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts that probably should have never happened. Life income gifts are a marvel, allowing donors to receive income, avoid capital gains, and secure an income tax deduction by making make a generous contribution now. But sometimes a charity wants to get the liability for an annuity off its books. Some donors never really needed income in the first place. Still others want the charity to put their gifts to work right away instead of waiting until they are gone.
Regardless of the reason, some life income recipients don’t want or need that income. When that happens, there is an opportunity to make an even greater contribution – and enjoy some additional tax savings too. In this session we will explore options for a donor who no longer wants or needs their life income gift including how to estimate the new charitable deduction. And we’ll review examples of life income gifts that, just maybe, should never have happened in the first place!
