Associate Vice President for University Relations

Reporting to the Vice President for University Relations and leading a staff of nine, the Associate Vice President provides the strategic direction and leadership for all individual giving functions.  While maintaining a portfolio of major gift prospects, the Associate Vice President will develop the capacity of the staff, the Vice President and the Vice-Chancellor to identify, cultivate and solicit individuals with the ability to make significant gifts to the University and continue to expand lifelong giving.  In particular, the Associate Vice President will work closely with the new Vice President to create more robust development practices and goals for the office, the major gift officers, and the annual fund staff.  As the University looks to its next campaign, the Associate Vice President will play a key role in all phases of the campaign. Direct reports to the Associate Vice President are:  Director of Annual Giving, Director of Planned Giving, and three major gift officers.  The Associate Vice President will work closely with the Director of Development in donor management and prospect research. 

Desired Qualifications

Desired qualifications for the Associate Vice President include:

-  experience managing staff and programs within a sophisticated development operation, preferably in higher education;

-superb skills in major gift cultivation and solicitation;

-successful experience in a comprehensive campaign;

-ability to work closely with the Vice-Chancellor, volunteers, board members, faculty, and other administrators to further the philanthropic goals of the University;

-demonstrated ability to build and develop staff and programs;

-ability to engage alumni, trustees, regents, community members, parents, and friends of the College and School of Theology in garnering financial support;

-deep understanding of the current best practices in development including annual, major, and planned giving, as well as prospect research;

-ability to embrace the culture and values of Sewanee;

-and ability to articulate the University's mission and aspirations to prospective donors.
